ph carlos gardel, architecture raffle house generation 2013.
Objective. The project aimed to be a whole volumetry capable of solving:lighting, privacy, heritage, and topography while maximizing views. A half-story layout follows the slope, merging interior and exterior spaces. An elevated east-west prism houses social areas, optimizing ventilation and views. A separate north-south prism ensures privacy, dividing the plot into well-lit private yards without exterior walls.
Context.
P.H Carlos Gardel won the 2018 housing contest of the Faculty of Architecture in Montevideo, organized by “Arquitectura Rifa” to fund a global academic trip. Focused on a Sustainable City concept, the project emphasizes infrastructure reuse, connectivity, and heritage conservation. It consists of two 90-m² dwellings on a 336-m² plot in “Barrio Sur,” near the Rambla and the historic Gasometer. Each home accommodates four people, including living spaces, bedrooms, bathrooms, and outdoor amenities.
Performance.
The project considers volumetry, alignment, facade rhythms, and environmental character. It maintains the street’s continuous profile, echoing the “casa patio” typology with homes arranged around a central courtyard. A “zaguán” allows flexible access to different areas without interference. The flat rooftop serves as an extra living space, while the ground-floor barbecue fosters a strong street connection, reinforcing the neighborhood’s communal tradition.
